Clay Playground. Sodas2123

In today’s context, as traditional earthen architecture is disappearing from architectural vocabulary and practice, and urban development has become inseparable from concrete, plastics and other carbon- and petroleum-intensive materials, Clay Playground invites us to rediscover clay as a tool for building and for play.
Clay Playground was created using a hand-pressed mixture of unfired clay, sand, lime, gravel, and rammed earth. The construction process became an opportunity for an invited team of architects and students to gain hands-on experience with this technique. Working in consultation with international specialists, the playground was developed through practical workshops involving formwork tests, material recipe experiments, and on-site problem solving.
The Clay Playground marked a new direction for the cultural complex SODAS 2123 and its educational projects—a series of seasonal play structures and play-related programs curated by Vilius Vaitiekūnas. Over the next two years, temporary installations will offer new perspectives on play environments, where through touch, exploration, and experimentation children will form their own relationship with the world they inherit.
